Scholarship Program

The Sickle Cell Association of the National Capital Area, Inc. (SCANCA, Inc.) is dedicated to supporting the educational aspirations of individuals living with sickle cell disease. Serving patients and families in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, one of our primary goals is to facilitate higher education for those affected by this condition. This year, we are proud to recognize four extraordinary young women who have not only overcome significant challenges but are also poised to become future leaders. Despite the difficulties posed by their medical conditions, these individuals have demonstrated remarkable resilience and a commitment to giving back to their communities. They serve as inspiring examples of determination and strength, striving to uplift others facing similar challenges.

To further our mission, SCANCA, Inc. provides annual scholarships to students with sickle cell disease enrolled in institutions of higher learning, including colleges, technical schools, and graduate programs. Each year, a $500.00 award is granted to deserving applicants, with some recipients receiving support over multiple years if they continue to meet the qualifications. Our scholarship program aims to encourage students to stay focused on their educational and life goals, maintaining a positive outlook and a “CAN DO SPIRIT” despite any adversity they may face. By investing in their education, we hope to empower these students to achieve their full potential and make significant contributions to society.
